The Carriage Haus Studio is located right in downtown Mackinaw City, making it easy to walk on foot and explore all the downtown has to offer.
The Old Point Lighthouse was in operation from 1890 until 1957. This lighthouse is located within Michilimackinac State Park, just a few hundred feet east of the Mackinac Bridge and the Colonial Michilimackinac Visitors Center. The one-of-a-kind attraction features a museum run by Mackinac Parks Commission—it’s an excellent place for families to explore together and learn some history about the Straits area.
One of the best places to view the Mackinac Bridge is Alexander Henry Park. This lakeshore spot features plenty of outdoor space to take a stroll, have a picnic, or sit back and enjoy a breezy day. This park is convenient for all visitors, with plenty of parking and handicap-accessible paths along the shore. There’s also a sandy beach for even more fun!
If you’re interested in local history, the military, and watercraft, be sure to visit the Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum. Onboard the US Coast Guard Mackinaw WAGB-83, decommissioned in 2006, you’ll get an up-close view of life aboard this ice-breaking ship constructed to aid the war effort in the 1940s. The tour takes you through the craft, visiting the Mess Deck, Engine Room, and above deck.
Mackinac Island is a magical place full of charm and adventure. The island is only accessible by air or water; you won’t find any cars here--instead, you can rent a bike or take a carriage tour to see the sights. There’s a long, storied history to Mackinac Island, and you can visit sites like Fort Mackinac and museums to learn more. Don’t leave the island without trying some of the famous fudge! You can catch the Shepler’s Ferry to visit the island, located about 1/4 mile away.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources operates the Mackinaw City Marina and is known for its clean and well-maintained appearance. You can launch your boat and traverse the Straits from here. Also, you can rent bicycles and ride around town!
Tahquamenon Falls is known for its beauty, voluminousness, and amber color, giving it the nickname “Root Beer Falls.” Over 50,000 gallons of water are headed over the 50 foot drop each second, making it the second-largest waterfall by volume east of the Mississippi River! The surrounding state park offers plenty of hiking, fishing, canoeing, and swimming opportunities.
Headlands International Dark Sky Park is located on the Straits of Mackinac and contains 550 acres of pristine woodlands. It is full of wild native animals, such as bald eagles, whitetail deer, osprey, and even black bears.
It is one of a handful of International Dark Sky Parks in the world, which means that the space is protected from the intrusion of light at night, allowing for some really spectacular stargazing. You can even catch the Northern Lights a few times a year.
If you are ready for a little drive, head over to Castle Rock. It is one of the oldest lookout points in the State, having been used by the Ojibwa Tribe for centuries. It is 195 feet above the water and offers an inspiring view of Mackinac Island, Lake Huron, and downtown St. Ignace.
Visitors can find one of the best views of Lake Huron atop Castle Rock in St Ignace. This limestone formation stands tall at nearly 200 feet, and you can climb the stairs and take in the scenic vista. At the bottom, you’ll be greeted by a larger-than-life statue of Paul Bunyan, his Ox, and a fun gift shop.
If you want to get over to Mackinac Island, you will have to travel across the water. Shepler has been running a ferry over and back to the island multiple times per day for more than five decades. You can walk right to the ferry from the Carriage Haus Studio.
Shepler’s Ferry offers a shuttle to Mackinac Island from late April through October. It’s the fastest charter, and they offer additional add-ons if you’d like to bring your bike or purchase tickets for island attractions in advance. The ferry is just a quick 10-minute walk away from your door!
Mackinaw City offers plenty of dining options you are sure to fall in love with.
